Liverpool vs Southampton match preview

On Saturday, March 8th, 2025, at 10:00 AM EST. Liverpool will host Southampton at Anfield for an intriguing match between what I hope will be a reserve Liverpool team vs Southampton’s first team. As a Liverpool fan, I see this match as a chance for some starters like Gravenberch and Szoboszlai to receive a much-needed rest after a demanding win over PSG, where we’re run around like we’ve forgotten how to play football. Let's start Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, and Harvey Elliot in the midfield instead of our normal starters. I do not doubt that this midfield should be able to contain Southampton’s weak midfield, especially after the performance they all put in during Wednesday’s match in Paris. I would start Jarell Quansah, who’s looked very promising this season, in the backfield with Konate while having Trent and Tsimikas as the fullbacks. Up front, I have Salah, Nunez, and Chiesa with the options of Diaz and hopefully Gakpo on the bench. I know most people would like to sit Salah after his performance in Paris, however, I feel like we should start him so hopefully he could continue to score goals so he will be a lock for Golden Boot race. If this is his last season at the club, I think we should support him in any way possible so he will go out with as many awards as possible.

Looking at the table, currently, we sit first with the best attack in the league (66 goals) and the second-best defense ( 26 goals allowed, only behind Arsenal at 23 goals allowed). Southampton sits last with the worst attack in the league (19 goals) and the worst defense in the league (65 goals allowed) while only accumulating 9 points so far this season. It’s worth pointing out that Salah (25 Goals) and Haaland (20 goals) both have more goals than Southampton. In their last 5 Premier League matches, they’ve been beaten 4 times with back-to-back games, losing 4 - 0 with a total of 15 goals conceded and only scoring 4 times.

What should we expect from this game? I think we will win 3 - 0, even while resting half of the starters. Liverpool is just on a different level. Expect a dominant performance from Endo in the defensive midfielder role with goals from Chiesa, Salah, and Elliot. Allison will most likely start and still be perfectly rested for our next match at home against PSG.
