Liverpool vs PSG match reaction
I took a day to gather my thoughts on this game. It sucks to lose and hurts the soul a little, but PSG came to play and deserved to win. We played miles better in this game than in the past 2 games, but it wasn’t good enough. I believe that even though we played better, PSG still played better than we did. The most frustrating part of this loss is that it was preventable; we made a defensive mistake again, and it cost us. Just like in the Southampton game on Saturday, we conceded off of a defensive mistake, and this time, we didn’t have the fire-power to get us back ahead. For anyone whom haven’t watched the goal, Konate was out of position and had to make a desperate slide to get to the attacker. To be fair, he did get the slide tackle in, but Alisson already committed to diving at the attacker, and it caused the ball to bounce through Alisson, and only Dembele saw the ball and passed it into the goal.
I know a lot of us fans are disappointed that we lost and that we now had a bad season vs the expectations, but I think they feel this way because of how much of a gap we have against other Premier League teams. After Sunday’s match against Newcastle for the league cup, it’s almost like our season is over. When you truly look at it, though, this is still Klopp’s players, and we didn’t expect for Slot to come in and be as good as this. As fans, we need to not undervalue this season, considering how hard it is to win the league with only 1 loss so far.
Overall, I feel like most players had a good game, a couple of great performances, and a couple of bad performances. Trent and Robertson were our 2 most standout players. Most of our better attacks came from our full-backs, especially in the 2nd half. Trent started the second half with loads of energy and purpose until he landed on his ankle and had to come off. Robertson was brilliant on the attack, making overlapping runs and applying pressure up the pitch. I think Robertson was the only player who still had energy even after playing 120 minutes. Jarell Quansah was outstanding. There’s not much more to say, he was great on attack and defense. I honestly was worried after Trent went off, but Quansah stepped up big time. We cannot leave this section without talking about Alisson, he was remarkable again in this game. He once again kept that strong PSG attack out of his net(besides the mistake), which is difficult. He made a remarkable 1 on 1 save that should’ve been a goal. He needs to step up his penalty game a little.
When it comes to more of the disappointing performances, you could argue that most of the subs didn’t perform as expected, but my 3 were Gravenberch, Jota, and Salah. Gravenberch needed a rest on Saturday, and he didn’t get one. Do I think he had a bad game? No. But when looking at impact players, he wasn’t the Gravenberch we came to love. Jota should not have started in this game. Another poor performance from an attacker who is in a major slump of form. We should have started Nunez. Salah again, like Gravenberch, didn’t play poorly, but we needed goals, and Salah was absent. I am tired of seeing Diaz play the game too hard, if that makes sense. It’s almost like playing FIFA against someone who just randomly hits the skill combination all the time. He goes so fast that he constantly tripping on the ball or losing the ball because of all the skill moves. The poorest performance of them all was the referee. That was the worst referee performance I’ve seen. I don’t know what game he saw because every time they played a replay on a missed foul, you can see him looking directly at the foul and not calling it. We deserved a penalty, and so many more fouls were called on us. I do think PSG could have the same argument, but that was poor and needs to be addressed.
I do want to say congratulations to PSG they came to play and deserved to win. I think they will go on and win the tournament. I am ready for Sunday’s title game against Newcastle. Lets hope we get back on good form.
